John McEnroe

Top 10 insults and trash-talk

How things are done in Zambia:
“Musumba Bwayla is a stupid man and a hopeless player, he has a huge nose and is cross-eyed, and girls hate him,” said Lighton Ndefwayl. “He beats me because my jockstrap was too tight and because when he serves he farts, and that made me lose my concentration, for which I am famous throughout Zambia.”

John McEnroe, while losing to Brad Gilbert at Madison Square Garden in the 1980s:
“Gilbert, you don’t deserve to be on the same court with me. You’re the worst, the f—— worst.”

Andre Agassi on Pete Sampras:
“Pete sounds more robotic than a parrot. I envy Pete’s dullness. I wish I could emulate his spectacular lack of inspiration, and his peculiar lack of need for inspiration.”

What Anna Kournikova said to Martina Hingis after losing 6-0 6-0 to her at the junior US Open:
“You won, but I’m prettier and more marketable than you.”

John McEnroe, after a Czech opponent inadvertently struck him with a tennis ball:
“You’ll be sorry you hit me you f—— communist a——.”

John McEnroe gives his thoughts on Ivan Lendl:
“I’ve got more talent in my pinkie than Lendl has in his whole body. The guy hasn’t been good for tennis. He’s been so selfish. And he’s certainly not the kind of guy who brings out the best in others. He’s hurt the popularity of the game so much. Do you like a robot being the world number one?”

Alla Kudryavtseva’s second-round victory over Maria Sharapova at the 2008 Wimbledon Championships was inspired by a loathing of the Siberian’s tuxedo-top and shorts outfit:
“It was very pleasant to beat Maria. Why? I don’t like her outfit. She’s brave enough to experiment and I give her credit for that, but the outfit was a little bit too much of everything. It was one of the motivations to beat her.”

Roger Federer on British tennis:
“How long is it since a British man won a grand slam? Like, 150,000 years.”

Boris Becker on Pat Cash after beating him at Wimbledon in the late 1980s:
“Cash is not one of my favourite people. He’s one of the most aggressive, obnoxious players. I don’t talk to him very often and I’m not the only one.”

Jimmy Connors to John McEnroe:
“Shut up. Grow up. You’re a baby. I’ve got a son your age.”

“I’m prettier and more marketable than you”  What a feminist.

Anna Kournikova in People Magazine’s 50 Most Beautiful People issue in the late 90s being asked if she liked her life replied to the tune of “I’m young, I’m beautiful, I’m rich, and I’m famous.  Why wouldn’t I like my life?”

All this makes me ROTFL… good for press, bad for culture. I honestly think Nadal sets a good example for not being an arse…

The Federer one is even better in context – he’d been asked in his on-court interview after his 2010 AO semifinal to say a few words to the BBC camera (Murray was his opponent in the final). He said the quote in the article, and followed it with something like ‘and you’re gonna have to wait a bit longer, cos I’m gonna beat him’. Was a fun change from the standard ‘tough opponent…have to play well…take my chances etc’!

A jealous Ivan Lendl once said of Bjorn Borg, “How can someone of his limited ability win five Wimbledon titles.” Ouch!
